“Every Sunday after church we’d all sit a spell, laugh and fill our bellies with a delicious home-cooked meal made up of all the best dishes folks could bring. Before digging in we’d say, Amen for Food, Faith, and Family as this was the basis of everything to our family. The aromas would fill the room and our noses with sweet and savory mouthwatering memories to last a lifetime; Grandma would bring her special Creamy Vegetable Soup and Dorothy Jo’d bring her Homemade buttery Biscuits. The senses would tingle as we’d dig in to Grandpa Jake’s special slow Smoked Pulled Pork or Mama’s Famous Fried Chicken while our chins gleamed from Buttery Corn on the Cob straight from Uncle Billy’s own garden…everyone took so much pride in their cooking, but nobody more so than sweet Aunt Marth, whose famous Southern Peach Pies made us all loosen our belts just a bit.
Having everyone together was a blessing. After dinner some folks would tell tall-tales and stories or maybe pick some tunes on worn out guitars and banjos, and we all did our best to sing-a-long. We’d even have a few friendly contests like horseshoes, marbles or foot races. Mama kept that tradition going throughout our time growing up in Locust Ridge.
My Smoky Mountain Adventures brings back memories of all those stories and traditions. You and your family are sure to enjoy them as much as we did. I hope we leave you with family memories that last a lifetime.”
